Soft seal butterfly valves are a type of butterfly valve that is known for its excellent sealing performance. They achieve zero leakage seals by the combination of elastic sealing materials and metal valve seats, and are widely used in fluid control applications. The following provides a detailed introduction from a technical perspective:
Core Structure and Sealing Principle.
1、Key component
Valve Body: Commonly made of ductile iron, cast steel, or stainless steel, it bears the pressure of the medium and secures the valve seat.
Butterfly Plate: A circular disc-shaped valve flap, typically made of carbon steel, stainless steel, or coated with a wear-resistant material, which rotates 90° to open and close by driving the valve stem.
Soft Seal Valve Seat: Made of elastic materials such as nitrile rubber (NBR), ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), or fluororubber (FKM), it is embedded or glued onto the valve body and closely adheres to the edge of the butterfly plate.
Valve Stem: Transmits the driving force, requiring corrosion resistance (such as stainless steel), and may have its surface harde ned for enhanced wear resistance.
2、Sealing principle
When the butterfly plate rotates, the soft-sealing valve seat tightly adheres to the edge of the butterfly plate due to elastic deformation, forming a "lip seal" or "compression seal" to prevent the leakage of the medium. The sealing performance depends on the elasticity of the material, the accuracy of the fit between the valve seat and the butterfly plate, and the compression effect of the medium pressure on the sealing surface (in some working conditions, the higher the medium pressure, the more reliable the seal).
